Moire Bridge, Union Station, Los Angeles, CA

A new pedestrian bridge at Union Station in Los Angeles was clad with two layers of perforated stainless steel panels. The inner layer is fixed but the outer layer is hinged so the panels can sway in the wind. The resulting optical interference patterns (Moire patterns) between the fixed and moving layers creates an undulating light environment inside the bridge. Viewed from outside, waves of light energy appear to move through the architecture. The bridge was designed in collaboration with Gensler Architects and completed in 2021.
