River of Air
River of Air, Paris, France
River of Air, I collaborated with the Paris-based architectural firm, Group 6, on the
design of a wind-animated canopy suspended over a new train station in the Maison Blanche
district of Paris. This sculpture, which is the largest artwork in Paris, spans an entire city block.
The hammock-shaped cable net structure is populated with thousands of hinged elements that
sway in the wind and are intended to create the impression of water and the surface of the
nearby Seine River. Each swaying panels has a blue coating that shifts hue depending on the
viewing angle and reflections from the sky. The result is an ever-changing fluid mosaic of
sparkling blue “pixels”, revealing the patterns of the wind and enlivening the entrances and
exits of the train station with an immersive, aqueous light environment.
