Breathing Tree, Henderson Central Park, Hong Kong (with Zaha Hadid) 2025

The Breathing Tree consists of a series of curved stainless steel tubes that support a wind-animated canopy. The tubes are perforated with small holes and pressurized with air to create a swirling air vortex inside the sculpture. Periodic injections of fog make the vortex visible. This rhythmic appearing and vanishing of the vortex reveals the pulse of of the artwork breathing. The Breathing Tree is a hollow vessel, open to the sky, responsive to the wind. The void in the center of the sculpture is empty of solid structure, yet alive with a vortex, a mixing of wind and water, a swirling cloud that will appear and vanish, reminding us the temporary nature of all phenomena, and the intricate beauty of the air we breathe.
